Controls Engineer - PLC Programming
Location: Auburn Hills, MI
Salary: $90,000 - $110,000 (commensurate with experience)

Position Overview
We are seeking a Controls Engineer with a strong foundation in PLC programming from scratch to support the design, development, and commissioning of material handling systems for automotive manufacturing environments. This role is ideal for a hands-on engineer who enjoys building control systems from the ground up and seeing projects through from concept to startup.
You will work closely with mechanical, electrical, and project engineering teams to deliver reliable, high-performance automation solutions for our customers.
Key Responsibilities

• 
  Design, develop, and program PLC-based control systems from scratch for material handling equipment
• 
  Develop and debug PLC programs using Allen-Bradley (Rockwell) and/or Siemens PLC platforms
• 
  Create and modify HMI applications as needed
• 
  Participate in system architecture design, I/O definition, and network configuration
• 
  Support equipment startup, commissioning, and troubleshooting at customer sites
• 
  Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure controls align with mechanical and electrical designs
• 
  Provide on-site and remote support during installation and production ramp-up
• 
  Maintain clear documentation including electrical schematics, PLC code, and functional descriptions

Required Qualifications

• 
  Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
• 
  3+ years of hands-on experience programming PLCs from scratch
• 
  Strong experience with Allen-Bradley and/or Siemens PLCs
• 
  Solid understanding of industrial control systems, I/O, sensors, VFDs, and safety circuits
• 
  Experience supporting automation equipment in an automotive manufacturing environment
• 
  Willingness to travel for system installation and commissioning

Nice-to-Have / Preferred Qualifications

• 
  Experience or strong interest in industrial robotics (e.g., FANUC, ABB, KUKA, Yaskawa)
• 
  Familiarity with material handling systems such as conveyors, lift systems, AGVs, or automated assembly lines
• 
  Experience with industrial networks (EtherNet/IP, Profinet, Profibus, DeviceNet)
• 
  Prior startup and commissioning experience at customer sites
